This moment was not just the highlight of the trip, but the highlight of my entire 22 years on earth!! It was like a dream.
I was just relaxing in my hut one day at Phinda Vlei Lodge, and all of a sudden I spotted about 10 or so elephants emerge from the brush. I started FREAKING OUT. I couldn’t even find the words to describe to my boyfriend what I was seeing, I just started screaming!! At this point, I had seen elephants on safari already, but never in a herd and never in my “backyard”!
At the moment I spotted them, I actually just got out of the bath and wasn’t even dressed. But I just grabbed my Sand Cloud beach towel and immediately ran outside, without any expectations of them coming towards me at all…
Once the matriarch leader of the herd started walking towards me, the whole pack followed. Apparently they were very thirsty from their long migration towards the south side of the reserve (which we learned from our ranger later that day) and were on the hunt for water!
You’ll see in the beginning of the video how the elephants scare away once spotting me on the deck, but just minutes later they all came back for some more drinks! And they stayed for a while. My whole body was shaking (literally- trembling from head to toe) from excitement, adrenaline, and just utter disbelief. I was so happy my boyfriend was the one filming lol!
Most surreal experience of my life…being that close to those wild, humongous, adorable, beautiful creatures with just the small plunge pool being the only thing between us 😱😱😱😱😱😱.
My life is now complete!!!
